Habla Espanol? Me Neither!

I am just full of rants tonight. Sorry about that. The Dallas Independent School District passed a ridiculous, bullshit (sorry, Nana) resolution last night:

Principals will be required to learn the primary language spoken by the majority of the students in their school. In most cases, this of course is Spanish. The Principals have 3 years to learn it.

COME ON, PEOPLE!!! This Spanish thing is going a little too far. If I moved to France or Germany I would not expect them to cater to the fact that I didn’t want to learn their language. I would fully expect the need to learn the language if I was moving to either of those places.

It’s bad enough that I have to read the McDonald’s menu in English and Spanish or that the instruction manuals in things I purchase are extra-thick because they include a complete manual in Spanish too, but not requiring children to learn English is doing them a huge disservice. What if these kids move somewhere up north where there isn’t a large Spanish-speaking population? How the hell will they communicate? Does this mean that in 12-15 years when these kids graduate I’ll be let go from my job because I can’t speak Spanish? I know a lot of other people in the Metroplex that will be unemployed if that’s the case.

Not only that, but what about the immigrants who came here way back when and struggled to learn the language, but did it - we’re now just spitting in the face of their hard work and achievement and saying “Well, your great-grandfather may have been dedicated enough to learn English, but since you don’t want to it’s ok. We’ll bend for you.”

What if the majority of a school speaks Chinese? The principal now has to learn Chinese? (No offense, Chinese-speakers). It’s just ridiculous to me.
